Choosing a high-quality dog food for your furry friend is really essential for them to live a happy and healthy life.

After all, good nutrition equals a healthy and happy dog!

If your doggie friend leads a very active lifestyle, then you should probably feed him high-quality dog food which is also rich in protein to decrease protein turnover and muscle degradation.

In this blog, I’ll help you in choosing a high-quality, high protein dog food for your pet!

So, without further ado, let’s jump right in!

Speak to your vet

This should be your number one on your list.

“Why?”, you ask?

Well, before you make any tweaks or adjustments in your dog’s diet you first need to get a green light from the vet.

This is simply because your vet knows more about your dog’s health and is more experienced in making the right decision for your doggie friend.

Your vet will recommend a diet plan for your dog keeping the following things in mind:

  • Your dog’s age
  • Your dog’s activity level
  • Other conditions that need special care

Some dogs are sensitive to certain ingredients, so your vet will certainly go through that as well.

After all, your pet’s well being is our number one concern!

Moving on…

Read the labels

This is probably the first thing you should look for before purchasing any food product.

There are a few things you need to look for on the food label, namely:

  • The macros
  • The ingredients

In this section, I’ll go through the importance (and ideal values) of each of these so that you get a fair idea.

The macronutrients

There are three macronutrients that we derive from food:

  • Carbohydrates
  • Proteins
  • Fats

When you’re looking for a high-protein food, you should look for foods that contain at least 30 percent protein.

If you have an older dog (or a breed that’s known to put on weight quite easily) then I’d suggest you get a dog food that’s lower in fat and carbs.

You can see some of my suggestions in the article I wrote previously: good dog food for pitbulls.

Moving on…

The ingredients

Going through the macronutrients alone won’t help you find the right (or the best) kind of dog food. There’s one thing that most dog owners tend to ignore when choosing a high-quality dog food: The Ingredients.

Now, this is a topic on its own and so I won’t delve into all of it right now.

But, all you should know is that when looking for a high-quality high protein food, you should look for where the protein comes from. The most acceptable source of protein is named animal meats.

So, take a look at the meat content of the dog food.

Summing up

When you’re looking to buy a high-quality high protein dog food, there are a few things that you should do:

  • Call the vet and get some recommendations
  • Read the food labels of the doggie food
  • Look for the meat content that the dog food contains

I hope this blog made it easier for you in choosing a high-quality high protein dog food! If you have any questions, you can ask them in the comments section!
