Both my young dog and house rabbit have a lot of dandruff at the moment and seem a bit itchy. Is this connected? What do you think it might be?

Graham Finch advises…

Yes, a great hunch! Rabbits can quite often get an infestation of a mite called cheyletiella, which is colloquially known as ‘walking dandruff’, as you can just see the mite moving with the naked eye (if you are younger than me). This is transmissible to dogs producing the sort of signs you describe. Cheyletiella can be diagnosed by examining the dandruff under a microscope and is easily treated with sprays and shampoos, so a trip to the vet to get this confirmed is a good idea.
