Get involved and help change lives with the #GreatDogWalkTogether, taking place across the UK on Saturday 23 June 2018 at 11am.
The event aims to encourage people to arrange a community walk, invite everyone to join in and promote wellbeing through enjoying the company of others. Loneliness affects around nine million people in the UK and includes those living alone, spending time alone as well as those who are living away from their family and friends.
The event supports the Great Get Together initiative, which was set up by the Jo Cox Commission study into loneliness to encourage people within their community to get together and celebrate what they have in common.
The idea came from Elaine Brown, owner of In Your Dog House. Elaine says, “What could be simpler than arranging a walk to start a conversation with people in your community? All you have to do is decide where you want to walk and invite others to join in. We even provide suggestions as to how you can promote your walk because we want to ensure that everyone has the chance to take part. Nobody who wants company should be without it.”
“These walks can involve small groups meeting locally for a short walk around their neighbourhood streets or a longer walk in a nearby park or surrounding countryside. It doesn’t need to be a large gathering. It’s for everyone across the country to get involved with and you don’t even need a dog to take part. We simply want to find a way for more people to get out and about and enjoy the company of dogs to promote wellbeing.”
