I give my Westie a square of cheese most evenings, which he loves. He’s a good weight and has never had a bad reaction to it, but my friend told me that I shouldn’t feed dairy, as it is bad for dogs. Is this true?
John Burns advises…
Cheese isn’t the best treat to give a dog, as many dogs do not digest dairy very well – although most do really love it. Even though he is a nice weight, it may be causing extra waste products in his body that can lead to health problems.
There are loads of great dog treats available in pet shops. Dried fish treats are often very good, or dog biscuits that contain simple, natural recipes. Vegetables also make healthy treats, so you could try some different ones and see which he prefers.
