Why is pork rarely used in commercial dog food? Is it really bad for dogs?

John Burns advises…

There is an old wives’ tale that dogs shouldn’t eat pork. There is actually no truth to this and we think it may originate from pork being a meat that used to contain parasites that could be harmful to dogs. This would only be an issue if the pork was eaten raw, and these days the parasites in pork are rare. As many dogs have never eaten pork, it works very well as a novel protein source for those prone to allergies, as we want to find something the dog has never eaten before so they will not have built up a reaction to it.
