Can you tell me why my dog always wipes her feet on the grass after she’s done a poo? She also does it sometimes after she has done a wee.

Kirsten Dillon advises…

She is simply saying, “I was here”. Or, perhaps in this day and age, it is more akin to sending a ‘peemail’ or updating her Facebook status.

Dog waste contains an awful lot of information about them – and so do their feet. Their hind feet have glands that secrete pheromones, adding more information to what they have already left behind, such as their sex, sexual status, health, age etc. There may also be a visual component too – by messing up the ground, she may be saying, “Look here!” It’s perfectly natural and very common behaviour.
