With no workplace pension plan and a salary below minimum wage, the UK’s working dogs get a pretty ‘ruff’ deal on the employment front.
Because of this, the team at luxury self-catering accommodation, Dalriada Lodges, on the northeast coast of Scotland, would like to offer a hard-working hound a special getaway. Whether assisting with a disability, rounding up sheep or enforcing the law, the winner of the title will receive a short break for them and their human.
Dalriada Lodges has its own four-legged team member, Raven, a black Labrador who is always on hand to welcome guests and show canine pals around the pet-friendly lodges in Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire.
Raven is fully supportive of the #holsfordogs campaign, said owner and managing director kelly Mcalpine. She adds, “While owners know that they can come to Dalariada Lodges to switch off and relax, they often forget that a holiday has positive benefits for dogs too. Animal psychologists say that a holiday can improve a pet’s mental and physical wellbeing – they too can feel stressed and out of sorts, so a wee break now and again with members of their pack can do wonders for them.
“From guide dogs to sniffer dogs, working dogs make an incredible impact on our communities and the only thing they ask for in return is the over of their humans. There’s no doubt that working dogs are loved every bit as much as domestic pets, but we feel that they should get an extra bit of TLC to show just how much they are appreciated.”
How to enter
To be in with a chance of winning a seaside break to the five-star Dalriada Lodges, owners must nominate their dogs and explain why they go above and beyond the call of duty.
To enter the #Holsfordogs competition, owners need to post a photograph of their dog on social media – visit facebook.com/dalriadalodges and @dalriadalodges on Twitter and Instagram – sum up in no more than 50 words who their pet is deserving. The team at Dalriada will select the dog they feel is most worthy of the prize.
Kelly adds, “We already know that it is going to be an extremely difficult task as there are so many hard-working and heroic dogs out there that make a huge difference to their owners and the public.
“They are going to love their break here – Stonehaven is the perfect destination for a doggie holiday because of the abundance of countryside and coastal walks. Dalriada Lodges are just a short distance from the beach, and there’s even an ice cream shop on the boardwalk that sells a doggie version!”
Dalriada Lodges comprises of eight luxury self-catering lodges overlooking the town. All lodges have two en-suite bedrooms, a spacious lounge and kitchen area, and south-facing decking, with private parking and access to secure outdoor storage.
